In 2007 I began designing the poster and graphics for the Gravenstein Apple Fair in Sebastopol, California. Having a history in the apple industry, it was appropriate to begin designing in the style of the original fruit crate labels. Over the years I continued to develop my style and have become one of the few contemporary designers to accurately work in this nostalgic, decorative motif. Crate Label graphics present some of the most romantic and creative marriages of typography and promotional illustration and have been a popular collectible for decades. My work aims to mirror this classic style while utilizing today's digital tools.

I've designed many crate label style posters for the Apple Fair, each year choosing a mascot that represented some aspect of the local Sonoma County farming community. The 2017 design features a honey bee, so critical to farming communities everywhere, and the theme of the 2017 Festival. The apples and blossoms are Gravenstein, the local festival's namesake. In each crate label design I try to use a different but typical layout found in original 1930's labels. This structure with the central yellow circle is one of my favorites.

I designed and assembled the components of art and photographic illustration in Adobe Photoshop. I print the giclée myself on a Canon Pro-100 on Red River Aurora Art Natural 285, 100% Cotton Rag, Museum Grade, Heavy weight. The editions are signed and limited as follows: 20x14" - 75 copies; 16x12" - 100 copies; 12x9" 125 copies. Each print is signed and is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity. The prints are carefully packaged flat with plenty of padding.

I will be adding more limited editions to the collection. If you enjoy my work and are looking for a larger and less expensive alternative, please check out the collection of posters - these are out of print editions that are not available anywhere else.

Dan Gilbert

Crate Label Review:
“I have been an author and historian of western lithography for nearly forty years and have amassed the most comprehensive collection of vintage crate labels and agricultural advertising from The West and around the world, and am enthusiastically including Dan Gilbert's original designs as well. His work faithfully honors the spirit and artistic integrity of the genre. I don't know of any other artists today who are designing original modern crate labels so authentically and beautifully. Dan's excellent work is both modern and symbiotic with the past one-hundred years of label design.”
